Summary

The bmi group of airlines (British Midland Limited) is 100% owned by LHBD Holding Limited, a UK registered company owned by Lufthansa.

In July 2009, Lufthansa, holders of a 30% minus one share stake in bmi, successfully acquired a controlling stake in British Midland from the then chairman, Sir Michael Bishop, with the purchase of his 50% plus one share. The purchase of the remaining 20% stake, owned by Scandinavian Airline System, was completed by Lufthansa on 1 October 2009.

History

bmi  started life as an air school and was founded in May 1939 in the East Midlands, UK. Over 70 years later the airline still has its headquarters in the East Midlands and employs 4,500 people. Together the three airlines that make up the group:- bmi British Midland International, bmi regional and bmibaby, carry approximately 10 million passengers per year.

Route network

The main hub for the group is London Heathrow. From here, bmi, British Midland International flies to destinations across the UK and Ireland, Europe, Middle East and Africa; bmi regional from its Scotland headquarters focuses on business destinations and flies between key regional airports in the UK and Europe.

Product

On domestic and European flights bmi and bmi regional offer a selection of fares for the business and leisure traveller from great value fares to flexible economy fares which guarantee seating at the front of the aircraft, full ticket flexibility, complimentary on board catering and lounge access. A dedicated business class cabin is offered on certain European routes and to destinations across the Middle East and Africa.

bmi also invites its business customers flying internationally from London to sit back and relax in The Great British Lounge, and its Flexible Economy domestic UK customers to experience the stylish  London Room  at London Heathrow.

Partner airlines

bmi  has a number of codeshare and partner airlines around the world and is also a member of Star Alliance, joining in summer 2000. The Star Alliance member airlines are: Adria Airways, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Blue1, bmi, Brussels Airlines, Continental Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EGYPTAIR, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, SWISS, TAM, TAP Portugal, Turkish Airlines, THAI, United and US Airways. Aegean Airlines and Air India have been announced as future members. Overall, the Star Alliance network offers 21,050 daily flights to 1,167 airports in 181 countries.

Diamond Club

bmi’s frequent flyer scheme has three levels of membership, Blue, Silver and Gold. Members can earn and redeem miles with Star Alliance, other partner airlines and selected partners such as hotels, car hire and gifts. Status members benefit from additional privileges such as dedicated check-in, additional baggage allowances, priority baggage and lounge access.
